In this article, I wanted to share my experience in college for a year,
especially for those who live separately from their families, as well as tips in
dealing with college life, for freshmen and others as well.
Let me start this with a basic question: what is college? It is a place where
students go to study or receive training after they have left school according to
Oxford Dictionaries. We were told that college is going be tough and different
from our previous education institute, where the lecturers and even students have
different vibes. Sometimes, things can get a little complicated especially when this
is your first time to leave home in pursuit for a better future. Adaptation will take
time and it will be different for other people, from socializing to learning system
and even as crucial as way of living.
Over this whole year, I managed to learn some basic things that might seem
harmless but could effect deeply for us in the progress of pursuing our college life.
Here, I want to share the importance of these factors and tips on how to handle
these factors smartly.
First of all, knowing one’s weaknesses and strengths. It is very important to
know our own weaknesses and strengths, because if you don’t even know what are
your own capabilities, it will be a disaster. For example: a simple weakness like
unable to say no or procrastinate something can bring catastrophic trouble to your
college life. In the other side, a simple strength such as a diligent or altruistic could
help or even boost yourself as a person. That’s why it’s important to get to know
yourself first in order to overcome hardships in college. You also need to know
yourself by taking trusted personalities tests online like 16personalities.com and
temperamentquiz.com. They will state your personality as well as your strengths
and weaknesses. Other than taking online tests, you can talk to your close friends
or people in your circle to state some of your strengths and weaknesses.
Second important thing is time management, especially for majors like
design and engineering. Assignments, organization, socialization, outside campus
activities and other things will be with you as a college student, and this is where
time management play along. But, again, you need to know your own strengths
and weaknesses, then decide your priority list. The biggest enemy of this factor is
procrastination. Tips on handling this procrastination is to make your own
motivation so that you wouldn’t allow yourself to be lazy.
The third important thing is your circle of friends. It’s not a problem to
hangout with people, let alone have a bunch of friends, but remember to filter them, because they’re going to be your close friends, they’re gonna support you.
Keep in mind that even though you have strong principles, once you found the
incorrect circle, those principles will be faded. Know your environment and your
circle. Quickly leave when you found a negative circle which is able to affect your
own growth, either mentally, physically and spiritually. Tips on expanding your
circle is to keep your mind open, positive, stay true to yourself, and be confident of
who you are, because once you accept yourself, others will too.
So this is my article about college life, I hope this help you as a reader and
student. Enjoy the ups and downs at college, as it will shape you as a person.
