Perhaps, you’ve once caught yourself staring in awe at the vast starry night. Or maybe you’ve spent a lot of your precious time in the museum, admiring the works of a renowned artist. But have you ever asked yourself, why do we appreciate beauty? Why do we, in the face of a fascinating creation, can’t help getting mesmerized by it? A lot of people, when are questioned, don’t know how to answer this particular question. We tend to disregard them as an unexplained, mysterious itch in our head; however, others give varying answers.
Plato, the world’s first acclaimed philosopher, is the first men who’ve ever contemplated by it. He proposed the concept that the good things we aspired to be – kind, honest, and strong – are not limited to be contained within human beings, but to objects as well. We feel moved as we see the qualities in the object that we strive for, yet failed to achieve. Art is a mean to teach our souls to be closer to the qualities that it offers. This is probably the reason some individuals answered that they felt calmness and reached peaceful state when they looked at something beautiful.
Most people acknowledged that they adore an artwork based on the effort poured by the artist on to it, or the meaning behind the art itself. An artwork serves as a medium for artists to express themselves.
Although artists rarely explain the meaning behind their works, we can tell that there’s a reason behind it, since no act of creativity comes without meaning. The struggle of interpreting the context or the reason behind of an art, according to some people, is the definition of beauty.
Another interesting view is that, we appreciate beauty for it is not eternal. For instance, memories of our small, tranquil village – where we have spent our youth at – might not last forever. A blossoming tree that is currently full of life will wither one day. Its beauty is a brief, and surely will wither away when the time comes. The short-lived moment that we are still able to observe is one’s definition of beauty.
After all, there is no clear definition of why do we appreciate beauty. Different kinds of people react variously to diverse kinds of beauty; nevertheless, the only thing that matter is our way of appreciating it. Do we choose to learn from it, or do we choose to willingly enjoy the fleeting moment of the beauty itself?
